The Balearics have some of the hardest water in Spain. The supplier itself acknowledges that the water is hard or moderately hard depending on the area and the time of year, because the limestone ground of the island loads the water with calcium and magnesium. You see the result every day: white marks on the shower screen, taps that clog, scaled-up heater elements and washing machines that last half as long.
A softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium using resin, and regenerates that resin with brine. Correctly sized and properly programmed, it extends the life of water heaters, boilers, washing machines, dishwashers and taps, cuts detergent use and clears scale out of the pipework.
1. We measure the real hardness at your property. With a drop test kit, in front of you. We do not size by guesswork: hardness varies a lot from one municipality to the next and depending on whether the supply is mains or from a well.
2. We choose the right unit. Always volumetric, never timer-based: it regenerates according to the water you actually use, not every X days, so it uses less salt and less water. For a normal home of 2 to 4 people, 20-25 litres of resin.
3. We install it with a three-valve bypass. With three-piece unions instead of the plastic assembly the units come with. That way the appliance can be isolated or removed without cutting the water to the house, and future servicing takes minutes.
4. We program it and show you how to use it. We set the outlet hardness, do the first salt fill and explain how often to top it up. The job is left with a written guarantee.

It depends on the unit and on the existing plumbing. A complete domestic installation with a volumetric unit of 25 litres of resin, a sediment filter, a three-valve bypass, the drain connection and commissioning comes to around 1,200-1,500 euros plus VAT. We give a fixed price once we have seen the installation.
After the meter and before any branch, so the whole property gets treated water. It needs roughly 40 x 55 cm of floor space and 1.2 m of height, near a drain and a socket. Usually the utility room, the garage or under the stairs.
A domestic unit uses around 1.5 kg of salt per regeneration. In a normal home that means a 25 kg sack every one or two months. Many units give no low-salt warning, so it is worth checking the level in the tank from time to time.
A softener removes limescale but does not purify or desalinate: it replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium. It is excellent for the plumbing and for washing, but if you also want better drinking water, the answer is a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen tap.
It deals with limescale, but not with salinity or bacteria. In areas such as Campos, Ses Salines or the southern coast, where there is seawater intrusion into the wells, we check before quoting and, if needed, propose pre-filtration and reverse osmosis for drinking water.
