Why so many people buy bottled water in Mallorca

Because in many parts of the island the water, while perfectly drinkable and within regulations, is heavy with limescale and, in some coastal and well-supplied areas, has a salty taste people dislike. A reverse osmosis unit filters the water through a membrane that holds back most of the dissolved salts, the limescale and other compounds, and delivers neutral-tasting water from its own small tap beside the sink.

For a family it works out far cheaper than bottled water and the carrying stops. You also avoid the plastic packaging.

How we do it

We measure before installing. We check the conductivity of the incoming water (ppm or TDS) and the mains pressure. If the pressure is below 3 bar the unit needs a pump: we tell you beforehand, not afterwards.

We install under the sink with a separate tap on the worktop, an angle valve with an osmosis take-off and the reject line connected to the waste with a non-return outlet.

We commission it and measure again. We flush the filters and membrane, empty the first tank fill and show you the difference in conductivity between the incoming and the outgoing water. You see the result, we do not just promise it.

Servicing. Pre-filters are changed every 6-12 months and the membrane every 2-3 years, depending on use and water quality. We offer an annual contract with filters included from 95 €/year, and we also change filters on units installed by someone else.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install reverse osmosis in Mallorca?

A complete installation of a 5-stage domestic unit, with the separate tap, waste connection, commissioning and conductivity measurement, comes to around 850-950 euros plus VAT. If the mains pressure is low and a pump is needed, that is quoted separately.

What is the difference between a water softener and reverse osmosis?

The softener treats all the water in the property and removes limescale to protect the plumbing and the appliances. Reverse osmosis treats the water from one tap only and is for drinking and cooking: it removes limescale, salts, chlorine and off-tastes. Ideally you have both, because each does a different job.

Does my reverse osmosis unit need a pump?

It depends on your mains pressure. Below 3 bar the unit produces very little, takes a long time and wastes more reject water, so it needs a booster pump. We measure the pressure before quoting. In properties on a well and storage tank, one is nearly always needed.

How often do the filters need changing?

The sediment and carbon pre-filters every 6-12 months, depending on use and water hardness. The membrane every 2-3 years. If the water starts tasting different or the tank is slow to fill, that usually means the filters are saturated.

Do you change filters on a unit installed by someone else?

Yes. We work with standard-size filters, which are by far the most common. While we are there we clean and disinfect the filter housings and measure the conductivity, to check whether the membrane is still in good condition.

Does reverse osmosis remove the salt from well water?

Yes, it removes most of the dissolved salts, which is why it is the answer for saline well water in areas such as Campos or Ses Salines. A softener, by contrast, does not remove salt: only limescale.

Filtered water at home: the options in Mallorca

When someone looks for a filtered water dispenser they usually want the same thing: to stop buying bottled water and have good drinking water straight from the tap. In Mallorca there are three ways to get it, and not all of them work with the island water.

Filter jug or carbon tap filter

It improves the taste and the smell of chlorine, but removes neither limescale nor salt. In much of Mallorca the water is hard and brackish, so it falls short: you will notice the difference in the smell, not in the taste.

Reverse osmosis under the sink

This is the one that genuinely works here. The unit is hidden inside the cupboard and a small separate tap comes up through the worktop: that is your filtered water point. It removes limescale, salts, nitrates and off-tastes. In Campos, Sa Ràpita or Ses Salines, where the well water is very saline, it is the only option that makes the water genuinely pleasant to drink.

Bottle-fed water cooler or dispenser

Convenient at first, expensive in the long run: you are still carrying bottles and paying for every refill. Reverse osmosis pays for itself quite quickly against the continuous cost of bottled water.

We install reverse osmosis with its filtered water tap right across Mallorca, measure the conductivity before and after so you can see the difference, and can leave a take-off ready for the fridge or for a chilled water dispenser.

What exactly is a filtered water point and how is it installed?

It is a small separate tap on the worktop connected to a filtration unit hidden inside the sink cupboard. It takes about two hours to install: we tee off the cold supply, mount the unit, run the waste and drill the hole for the extra tap if there is not one already.

Is a filtered water point worth it in Mallorca?

Yes, mainly because of what bottled water costs. A family buying bottled water spends a good deal over a year, and reverse osmosis with its own tap pays for itself before long. You also stop carrying weight and generating plastic.

Can the filtered water be connected to the fridge or to a chilled water dispenser?

Yes. We run a take-off from the osmosis unit to a fridge with a dispenser or to a chiller, so the ice and the chilled water are filtered too.
